The home break · 100m from the door
A south-facing sandy beach with a handful of peaks, and the best-known wave tucked against the Arade rivermouth jetty at the eastern end — a punchy left that gets hollow on the right swell. It works with the windows open in autumn and winter; summer is often small. Offshore winds here tend to come from the north.
Ten minutes west by car
Neighbouring beaches on the same coastline with their own peaks and a little more room to spread out. A handy option when the tide or wind isn’t kind to Rocha.
Arrifana, Amado, Sagres · about an hour away
The west coast is a different ocean: more consistent, bigger, colder water. Arrifana and Amado are classic Algarve surf trips — check swell, wind and your own limits before committing.

Learn with the locals
First wave or next step? Portimão Surf Clube offers surf lessons for beginners, intermediate and advanced surfers. Based at Praia da Rocha, the club also runs sessions on the Costa Vicentina, depending on conditions.
